Volunteer work in Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina: Practical Information

Most projects require a minimum stay of four weeks or more and a good level of Spanish. The standard volunteer program of La Montaña is eight weeks: the first four weeks you spend on studying Spanish and visiting different volunteer projects, followed by another four weeks of volunteer work. If you want to do more than four weeks of volunteer work, talk to our volunteer coordinator about the possibilities. People who already speak some Spanish, can do a Spanish course of one or two weeks, depending of their level of Spanish.

All volunteers of La Montaña will have to pay a volunteer fee of 100 dollars (other volunteers pay a fee of 125 dollars). Part of this is for organizing the volunteer work and part of it goes to the volunteer projects (for buying pens, paper, books, games, etc.).

Guidance by La Montaña

The volunteers will be guided by the volunteer coordinator of La Montaña Nicolás Strangis. Upon arrival, you will participate in the introduction program which involves informing you in general about local costums, the transport system, money and safety and specifically about your project. You will also have a one to one talk with the volunteer coordinator about your expectations and goals. On the first day of your volunteer work, the coordinator will take you to the project. During the period that you do volunteer work, you can always talk to our coordinator to talk about your experiences, possible problems, etc.

Procedure

When you want to book a volunteer place at one of our projects, you can send an e-mail with your motivation, preferences and resume (no previous experience in volunteer work is required) to: volunteerwork@lamontana.com. If the volunteer coordinator of La Montaña approves your application, you will be informed about it by mail. The admission to a specific volunteer project can be arranged by mail or when you arrive in Bariloche. In the last case, the volunteer coordinator will talk to you about the projects that are available, what your interests and capacities are and will try to make the perfect match. Before starting the volunteer work, you will have to sign the “General conditions Volunteer work” of La Montaña, which you can download here.

If you want more information or if you have any specific question regarding volunteer work, you can reach our volunteer coordinator at: volunteerwork@lamontana.com.

Volunteer Insurance

Please bear in mind that you’ll probably need another type of insurance if you are coming to Argentina for a volunteer job. Regular (travel) insurances usually do not cover any costs that are a result of (an accident while) volunteering, working or following a traineeship. La Montaña finds it very important to make sure that you are well covered in a flexible way and lowbudget way; to protect you as a volunteer, to protect our projects and to protect ourselves. Therefore we teamed up with The JoHo Company Insurances, based in The Netherlands and experienced in insuring people worldwide. Have a look at www.insurancesabroad.com for practical advise and to easily arrange your insurance online, or contact JoHo in Holland. Please mention ‘La Montaña’ when you take out a JoHo insurance and you will further support La Montaña projects!
